Remember when hardcore meant a band played fast and not necessarily slow and heavy? I don’t, but that’s because I’m a newbie. Hostile Takeover plays the thrash hardcore with fast beats and tons of screaming. Their sound is similar to Dystrophy, also from the bay area, and the other coast’s XfilesX. Having two vocalists really helps with their onslaught of noise. They both scream on the higher spectrum, giving an angry youthful vibe. While they do cover serious topics, like the hatred for gays in "My Limpwrist Hoodie Got Me Beat Up", they are also willing to go on the humorous side of things. This is evident in the song "Clap Down", which appears to be a request for more movement at shows. What makes it so funny is during the middle of the song, the tempo drops, claps queue up, and "Shake your ass, watch yourself. Shake your ass, show me what you’re working with," is belted out. Then the tempo rises again and your clavicle gets ripped out.
What really separates Hostile Takeover from bands of similar sound, and what happens to be my favorite part about the demo, is their use of metal riffs and mini solos that pop up every so often. These parts aren’t frequent enough where it overshadows things, but instead highlights. If you like fast hardcore music with a side of humor and a pinch of metal, then Hostile Takeover is the burrito for you.
They’ve also just released a 7" on Crucial Records that totally kicks ass.
