Posted by Jon E. on Thursday 12th August, 2010Punknews has been informed that Rainier, OR pop-punk trio Broadway Calls have given bassist/vocalist Matt Koenig the boot. Koenig gave us the following statement verbatim:
"Hello today, it\'s Matt Koenig here to break the sad sad news that i am no longer in Broadway Calls. I was asked to leave the band on the basis that I was decidedly no longer friends with the other band members, that my playing was "barely passable" and my "lack of song writing contribution". So that\'s that. People change, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. i find the whole thing unfortunate. My opinion is that i was an equally contributing member of the band i loved so much. I now get to focus on better things in my life.
I\'m in no way done playing music, as I\'ve already started a few bands with my friends around Portland. I\'ll be attending this years Fest in Gainsville, sure I\'ll see plenty of you there. But for now I\'ll put the focus of my life on my family and my wonderful new wife.
Over the past 4 and a half years I\'ve met countless amazing people, too many to name but some of which are now my closest friends. Played hundreds of shows. Had dreams come true by touring with some of my favorite bands, and seeing more of the US and Canada then I would have ever hoped. Also, visiting Europe 4 times over was equally astounding as it was humbling. Getting to work with Adeline and Side One Dummy Records as well as Blasting Room Studios was an honor. An especially large \'thank you\' to all of the people at those camps, without you this would have been a much different trip. And to anyone and everyone i met along the way, Thank you. I am forever changed. I now leave you with this, a fitting quote that i believe describes my time in BC perfectly, said by a much more well spoken man than myself...
Jeff Goldblum - "God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs." Thanks friends."
We reached out to drummer Josh Baird, who confirmed the situation. "That is 100% correct," Baird said, adding that Koenig was actually kicked out in early June. "We talked over phone. We were going to do it in person but decided it would be better for everyone via phone. The main reasons were (1): Matt and I haven\'t really been friends the past few years--just two guys that happened to be in the same band. And (2): Once we got home from the last tour we were planning on writing a new record and wanted a third member to contribute with the songwriting instead of just [frontman] Ty [Vaughn] and I writing the records. Matt wasn\'t a part of the writing process."
Koenig has already been replaced with Adam Willis, who played with Vaughn and Baird in Countdown to Life. The band is currently writing for a new full-length.
Koenig was a founding member of the band, having played on the band\'s debut EP as well as their following two full-lengths, the most recent being Good Views, Bad News in 2009.
Posted by Jon E. on Monday 26th July, 2010Masse Broberg (aka Emperor Magus Caligula), vocalist for Swedish black metal band Dark Funeral, has announced his departure from the group:
"I would like to inform all of our fans that on Saturday, August 21, at the Summer Breeze festival in Germany, I will be doing my last show with Dark Funeral. Naturally I have \'mixed feelings\' about this decision, but it is final! They say that every person will have about 15min of fame during their life! Well, I have had a \'hell-of-a-ride\' for 15 years now together with Lord Ahriman and Dark Funeral. As some people love to spread weird rumors about others, let me make this clear once and for all. I have not committed suicide, I have not taken an overdose, nor are there any personal issues between me and Dark Funeral... My life has taken a new turn lately, and I am also getting married this year (NOT to some crazy bitch in the U.S though, hahaha), whereof my priorities in life lie somewhere else.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank ALL of our fans for their amazing support during all the 15 years I’ve been with the band. And I would also like to thank my brothers in Dark Funeral for all these years together. Lord Ahriman and I have managed to raise Dark Funeral from the deepest of abyss, when we have confronted problems before. And there is NO doubt in my mind, that Dark Funeral, without me, will raise once more, stronger than ever... Thus I have spoken, thus shalt it be."
Consequently, Dark Funeral is in search of a replacement. Here\'s the official word:
"Naturally, our demands on a new vocalist will be VERY high, but we are fully confident that there are some amazing vocalists out there that would fit us like a hand in glove. So if you do believe that you have what it takes to blow us away with your vocal skills, and to replace Caligula, don’t hesitate to send us some audio/DVD files of your vocal performance! Send to: vocalist@darkfuneral.se"
Posted by Jon E. on Wednesday 14th July, 2010Envy on the Coast have called it quits. The band posted a lengthy note on their Facebook, some of which is excerpted here:
The day has come to pull down that curtain down. Sal and Jer sat down with Brian and I about a week ago and informed us that they are leaving Envy on the Coast. They explained that they are no longer happy being a part of this, and there was nothing Brian and I could do or say to change that. Because Envy on the Coast was founded upon the musical and personal relationships between the four of us, Brian and I have decided that we would rather move forward rather than finding musicians to replace Sal and Jer.
The band released Lowcountry in March.
Posted by Jon E. on Wednesday 14th July, 2010Poison The Well will be "taking a break" for the indefinite future. Here\'s the official word:
"So, after twelve years of being a band, countless tours around the world and records being released, we have made the decision to take some time to explore other interests in our lives. We\'ve all reached a point where we feel like we need to take a step back from the band and pursue other things. PTW has been an all encompassing, full-time thing for such a long period that this isn\'t an easy thing to do. We want to thank everyone who has supported us in anyway, whether it be buying a record or a shirt, to the occasional robbery from time to time. Once again, thanks for everything and we couldn\'t have done any of this without you."
Posted by Jon E. on Monday 12th July, 2010Southern California hardcore outfit Lewd Acts has broken up. Apparently the writing was on the wall following the group\'s decision to drop off their spring tour with Converge et al. The band has issued the following:
"Lou Dax succumbed on June 20th, 2010 to the coma brought on by a head wound sustained in New York City on May 6th. Lou is survived by his 4 sons. In lieu of flowers, pick up a Lou Dax memorial shirt or record at www.lewdacts.bigcartel.com or www.deathwishinc.com to help his legacy live on. Thank you to everyone who ever listened, saw, helped, or cared about Lou."
Posted by Jon E. on Friday 25th June, 2010Gainesville, FL\'s Anchor Arms have called it a day. Vocalist James Austin offered a detailed explanation for the band\'s demise, which you can read by clicking Read More.
The band issued one full-length, 2008\'s Cold Blooded, and several split releases, the most recent being a split 7" with Madison Bloodbath.
"well, it\'s been awhile, and a lot of people have asked me about the arms lately and or told me they\'ve "heard rumors" so i figure i should probably address the state of our band. the reality is that we\'re pretty much done, i\'d disclaim it with a "never say never" type thing, but we really haven\'t talked much lately and things got weird. i take the entirety of the blame for our demise. i have a lot of emotional issues and suffer from maniac depression and a severe panic disorder. it can certainly make me extremely difficult to deal/work with and at times is debilitating. often times when i\'ve wanted to travel or do things with the band, my mental status has made it literally impossible for me to do so. i try my ASS of everyday to do better and be better with it, but it is a daily struggle. i gave everything i had to give to anchor arms and i know craig, brian and nick did as well. at the end of the day, i\'m sure they simply couldn\'t continue to work with me in a situation where i was an integral part of the process, i sang and played guitar, kinda hard to do a vocal free show. i wish things could\'ve been different believe me, but i think a new start might help us all out. i\'m now performing as Eight Ghosts and am currently recording songs for a split 7" with current Casting Out/former Boy Sets Fire vocalist Nathan Gray\'s solo project. that\'s coming out on Fail Safe Records soon, then after that i\'m doing a full length which will be co-released on Death to False Hope Records and Fail Safe. the arms guys and i haven\'t spoken much lately, i think space is a good thing for now. i love and care deeply for those guys, but being friends is more important to me that playing music with them. Nick is back playing full time in Assassinate the Scientist and i think craig and bri are just enjoying some time with loved ones right now. i\'m going to tour with Eight Ghosts starting regionally in about 2 or 3 months, nationally after that, so if you want me to play where you are, please lemme know and i\'ll get there. you can reach me at quizmo31@aol.com, here or on the eight ghosts facebook thing. if you ever listened to an Anchor Arms song, came to a show, enjoyed what we did etc, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! it meant a lot more to us that i can express here. sorry for being crazy
james"
Posted by Jon E. on Friday 18th June, 2010Coalesce are planning some downtime for the upcoming months. Band bassist Nathan Ellis offered the following on their plans:
“It’s been a fun couple of years. We’ve had excellent tours with bands we love (Converge, Harvey Milk, Torche, Kylesa, Atlas Moth, Gaza, Touche Amore, Black Breath), been to Europe, East Coast, West Coast, released a new record and a follow up ep, played some great Festivals and had the opportunity to see some old friends, and meet a ton of new people.
This is a good time for a break.
Sean just bought a new house, Junior is starting his new business, Jes is putting the finishing touches on his PhD, and I’m going to sit on my couch and watch Shaun of the Dead.
Thanks for your continued support. Even if Jes put his thumb in your eye, I spit on you, sean puked RIGHT in front of you and Junior gave you a sweaty hug.
You’re the best,
Nathan Ellis”
Posted by Jon E. on Wednesday 16th June, 2010Alexandria, VA death metal/metalcore outfit ABACABB has reportedly called it quits. We\'re not exactly sure what happened but earlier this week we were alerted to the fact that bass player Stefan Mills recently quit the band and that the group had cancelled the last few dates of their recent run with The Ghost Inside and Stick To Your Guns. Upon further investigation (lol), it appears that ABACABB is done.
The most valid confirmation we can find regarding the group\'s demise comes from an online post via their guitarist: "Couldn\'t think of a better end to this band than a final meal at Whataburger with Stick To Your Guns."
Formed in 2004, ABACABB released an album with Sumerian Records in early-2009. The group had been scheduled to record a new full-length this spring, though we\'ve been told that said recording never took place.
Update: ABACABB vocalist Tyler Green has sent us the following:
"I have heard several things going around on why Abacabb called it quits. It was not just because our bass player quit, or because we had money problems, or any of the other reasons I have heard people talking about. There are probably a million reasons why we decided that it\'s best if we all moved on from Abacabb; it was basically a snowball effect that would not end. One thing led to another and it all just became so clear to me and the guys that we should just call it quits. I\'m sure you will see a couple of us doing other things in the future. I\'m going to go ahead and say the same thing that every other band says. Thanks for all the memories, thanks to anyone who came to a show, bought a CD or shirt, thanks to anyone who booked us a show, booked us a tour, worked for our band, let us sleep on their floor, or let us shower. Thanks to anyone who played in this band and made all this possible. It\'s been the best 6 years of my life and I wouldn\'t trade it for anything. We will be playing some last shows on the east coast this fall, make sure you come out! Also, we will be leaving our merchstores up for a few months so make sure you check them out and grab some merch!"
Posted by Jon E. on Monday 7th June, 2010In a recent interview, vocalist/guitarist Dan Vapid stated that The Methadones will call it a day by year\'s end, playing two final shows (one at this year\'s Insubordination Fest and another in their hometown of Chicago, IL) and releasing a collection of b-sides and outtakes packaged with five new songs. Here\'s a snippet regarding the band\'s split:
"i think the band has run it\'s course. The Methadones have played consistently for 10 years, which is more than any band/project I\'ve been a part of. We had our share of problems but were always intent on working past them. For the last 5 years every member has gone through a period of giving a shit and not giving a shit, all at different times. It got to the point where I felt like we were just going through the motions and forcing it."
Over the years The Methadones released material through A-F Records, Thick Records, It\'s Alive Records and Red Scare, with the latter label issuing the band\'s last full-length, 2007\'s This Won’t Hurt... Meanwhile, Vapid continues to stay busy with both Screeching Weasel and Riverdales, as well as his newest project, Noise By Numbers.

Posted by Jon E. on Friday 4th June, 2010Official press release:
After six years, 700+ shows, several releases, countless tours of North America, Europe, Australia and Asia, Ruiner will be calling it a day in October 2010 (as October 5th is the anniversary of the band\'s first show).
Vocalist Rob Sullivan commented: "This wasn\'t an easy choice to make. All of us started playing in bands when we were in middle school and for the first time in 12-13 years, some of us won\'t be having band practice on a weekly basis. But we know this is a choice we needed to make. We always ran this band at 100% and some of us now feel like we don\'t have the desire to tour anymore. We aren\'t the kind of band who wants to release records and rarely play the music, so we decided it is now an appropriate time to hang it up. We got to see the world a few times over and with that met a lot of incredible people. We will all be forever grateful for that, but we know this decision is the right one to make. I\'m sure I could give many more reasons as to why, but the gist of it is if this band can\'t be done at full speed, we feel it is better to stop."
Ruiner released their third full-length for Bridge Nine Records, Hell Is Empty, in September of 2009 and have been on tour non-stop around the globe in support of it. Throughout their career, the band has shared the stage with Sick of It All, Propagandhi, Agnostic Front, Bouncing Souls, Anti-Flag, and countless others. Bridge Nine owner Chris Wrenn commented: "It\'s a sad day at B9HQ. Ruiner was one of the best and hardest working bands the label has ever worked with and we are sad to see them throw in the towel, but understand the circumstances. We wish them all the best of luck with their future endeavors."
Ruiner has a European tour scheduled this July with Carpathian which will go on as scheduled, as well as a highly-coveted appearance at the sold out This Is Hardcore festival in Philadelphia on August 15th. Ruiner will schedule their final show in early October.
Posted by Jon E. on Tuesday 1st June, 2010Philadelphia, PA hardcore/punk band Barricade has essentially called it quits (the slim possibility of a future reformation apparently exists). Formed in 2004, the group has released material with Blackout! Records, Hand Of Hope Records, and Eulogy Recordings. Here\'s the official word:
"June 11th 2010, Day 1 of the East Coast Tsunami fest will be our last show for a long time and possibly ever. Tom and Schwenk have found great careers and are busy getting their lives together, which is keeping them from the road. Cody and I have started a new band with Barricade’s former bass player, John Barlow, called Animal Haus (myspace.com/animalhaus). Jimmy is also working on a new project as well. We have not ruled out getting back together in the future for a couple of shows or maybe even full-time once our lives settle down, but as of right now the time has come to take a much needed break.
"It\'s been over 6 years: dozens of members, drunken tours, hundreds of shows... Entirely too many hours living in a van. It was all worth it because of the lifetime of memories and friends we made along the way. We just want to thank all the people we have met on the road and all the friends that have supported us here at home.
"We promise to set shit off right one last time Friday during the ECT fest so come help us celebrate the end."
Posted by Jon E. on Friday 28th May, 2010Ottawa, Canada\'s Buried Inside is apparently going on an indefinite hiatus following thirteen years and several releases (including two with Relapse Records) together.
Guitarist/vocalist Andrew Tweedy had the following to say (in an Exclaim! interview): "We\'ve sort of refrained from calling it a break-up We\'re playing a few more shows, which will be our last, and then taking a break with no intention of resuming as of right now. It\'s less dramatic, I suppose. Life is catching up with us, I guess. It\'s hard to just take one step back at this point. You’re kind of in or you\'re out... we\'ve been less and less available for shows and tours the last little while, and ultimately the timing seemed right. The idea of continuing on half-hearted is the opposite of what this band has always been about."
Following two shows this week (in Toronto and Montreal, respectively), the group expects to play one final show in Ottawa this fall.
Posted by Jon E. on Friday 7th May, 2010Italian hardcore/metal group To Kill has announced plans to disband following the release of their final album, titled "Antarctica." The group has issued the following:
"To Kill has always been to us much much more than just playing and touring around, since we are truly each other\'s family and we felt, as a whole, that it was time for this part of our life together to end, since our personal paths were going in other directions and we all felt we wanted to pursue other aspects of our lives. Often you hear about bands breaking up and want to know what\'s behind that, what\'s the truth behind it and what\'s to know in some generic statement, well this is not the case. We love each other more than ever, no one sold out, there\'s no bad feeling of any sort, we just felt this was the right time for this adventure to go to an end, and for new stuff to happen to us. The bond we share will never break.
"A while ago we recorded our last album \'Antarctica,\' which we\'re very proud of and is a sort of an epitaph for our band, testifying how we\'ve grown together. We fucking love it! This record will be out this summer on Let It Burn Records at a soon to be announced date and will be available at all of our upcoming shows, because YES, we\'ll be playing some more shows. Since we want to have the chance to say goodbye to all of you who made this ride the most incredible adventure in our lives so far, we\'ll be anouncing soon a few shows scheduled for this fall both in Italy and around Europe. It would mean the world if you could show up, sing, sweat and mosh with us, so...let\'s make it fucking epic, alright?
"There would be a huge number of people to thank, so we will just thank all of you who made us feel privileged by touring and playing together the music that we love having the chance to say what we wanted to say, thanks for coming to shows, smiling, giving us a place to stay, buying a tshirt or just being nice. Thanks to all the ones involved in our band on a professional level, to all the bands we have been lucky enough to play with and to all those faces with no names which will be in our hearts forever.
"You\'ll know more about the record and about the final shows soon.
Posted by Jon E. on Tuesday 20th April, 2010Following a steady exodus of its members, Of Machines has called it a day. Formed in 2006, the Atlanta group released one album with Rise Records. Guitarist Michael Matejick has issued the following statement:
"I\'ve been turning this over in my head for weeks, now. At first I was angry, then confused, then incredibly bummed, until, finally, I was able to come to grips with it ... Of Machines is over. I don\'t think everyone in the band fully understood what we had accomplished in such a short amount of time. None of us have been so lucky to start a band and with in 3 months of being together and not even have played a single show, got signed. it was an amazing feeling to go from nothing to touring across the U.S. During our time as Of Machines we went on 8 U.S. Tours and sold more than 8,000+ cds, this is the most I had ever done in my life and probably ever will.
"But this was not enough to keep Dylan. Dylan left Of Machines the week after our last tour with the guys in Love Hate Hero. He almost did this to us on our second tour because of the band\'s finical problems but he ended up staying and waiting until now... the stress of financial issues, pressure from family and a ever developing mindset has forced him to leave the band in search of who he is and what he is meant to do in life. Dylan leaving created a domino effect. Almost immediately after Dylan\'s departure Jon decided it would be too much work to find a new singer and felt like this would never be the same. So he has decided to pursue his dream of becoming a culinary artist at la cordon blue. This left me, Brent and our new keyboardist Jason. We were determined to make things work until we lost the support of Rise and Artery. After this happened we knew it just wasn\'t going to happen for us there is no way to make this work.
"I will be posting everything we had ever demoed, messed around with, anything and everything we had ever did on the myspace shortly. Also I will be selling the last of our merch and CDs for very very cheap if anyone is still interested in any of it.
"Damn... I\'m going to miss all of this. I can\'t believe that this has all happened. I just want to say thank you to everyone that has ever let us chill with them, stay at their house, or eat their food. We experienced so many crazy things. From drunk people beating up our van, crazy dads protecting their daughters from us, to the hotel stay in Ohio (Elliott knows what I\'m talking about). These memories have been amazing. I will never forget in Texas chillin\' at the U-Haul place jammin with some friends, driving getting stuck in some of the craziest weather and all the crazy times in Cali.
"Also thank you so much to everyone who has ever supported us, bought/downloaded a CD or merch or came to a show. You have no idea how much everything meant to us. Our fans were amazing! You guys stuck with us through all the bullshit member changes and everything. I feel terrible we were unable to give you guys another CD, but I guess it\'s like everyone says all good things much come to an end. Thank you so much everyone.
"If anyone is interested, I believe the only people who will be continuing playing music will be myself and our drummer, Brent. Brent has found a band in Florida he is playing with. They don\'t have a name right now but I\'m sure once they get things going you will see more from them. As far as myself I am looking for new members to start a new project with. If anyone is interested hit me up on the band Myspace.
"Also this comes from everyone in the band; I know we have always wanted to talk about this to new upcoming musicians. If you are in a band or starting a new band please please please don\'t feel like you need to play the trendy music in the scene or try and sign to the trendy labels. Be different, be weird, be yourself. We were hoping to record another album to show you more than what\'s offered right now. Start a new scene; stop feeding to this oversaturated one."
Posted by Jon E. on Wednesday 14th April, 2010Deadly Animals (ex-Every Time I Die, etc.) have decided to call it quits. The following statement was issued on the matter:
“So we have some bad news everyone . . . Deadly Animals has decided to call it quits. Ian and myself have decided that at this time, we both have other endeavors going on in our lives that take away from giving this band our full attention. We will both be continuing on and doing other Music projects and other artistic outlets. Thank You sooo much to everyone who ever supported us in any way! Sorry that we never got to play a show!!!! Much love! Sincerely, DEADLY ANIMALS ( Michael Novak Jr. and Ian Weidrick )”
Posted by Jon E. on Tuesday 13th April, 2010Charlotte, NC hardcore/metal band To The Lions has broken up. The group has released the following explanation:
"So after everything that has happened to us in the past couple months, we have decided to call it quits. We\'ve had a lot of good and bad things happen to us recently as a band, the bad has finally gotten to us. As of recently, our management (Calab Morgan) has taken money from us and pretty much screwed us over. Forcing us as a band to start looking in other directions. We are sad to call it quits after everything but it\'s time for it. We have different directions in music we wanna take and some of us have lives that they wanna get started on. We think our music that we have been coming up with has been our best, and cause of this all our music on our Myspace is free to download. Take it as you will, enjoy it, hopefully you see our faces again soon in whatever we choose to do in our lives."
Posted by Jon E. on Saturday 10th April, 2010Underoath have announced the impending departure of their drummer/vocalist Aaron Gillespie through the following statement:
“We are taking this opportunity to sadly inform you the six of us have decided at the end of the current european tour, Aaron will no longer be playing in Underoath. This was not a decision made in haste but a thought out and prayed upon group agreement. It in no way effects any of the shows left on this tour. They will still be our best efforts and enjoyable experiences for all. For the future, Aaron will be pursuing other musical and ministry endeavors. As for the rest of us we will continue to work hard on the new Underoath record. We appreciate the love and support from everyone in the past and hope that all of us will continue to receive your support on our future paths. We love you guys. ….

Meanwhile, Gillespie himself offered the following on the matter:

Posted by Michael on Monday 29th March, 2010Fairly recently rejuvinated hardcore band 108 has announced their breakup as a result of frontman Robert Fish's departure from the group. The band was gearing up to release and support their new full-length effort, 18.61, which is still slated for a release on April 13th via Deathwish Inc.
