SPB premiere: “Circus of Wolves” by Night Court!
Night Court - Circus of Wolves

We’re sharing the first single from the soon to release debut of Night Court, Nervous Birds! One -- out Dec. 3 via Snappy Little Numbers (USA) and Debt Offensive Records (Canada).

The upcoming release takes a lo-fi, DIY punk approach with poppy elements and post-punk surprises, all written with the intention of spontaneity and (relative) simplicity.

We wrote and recorded 30 songs in 4 months during the pandemic lockdown in 2020 and this was one of the first ones. We made a conscious decision to not be too ‘precious’ with anything so it was easy to pump the songs out,” explains Jiffy Marx, one of the band’s vocalists and guitarists. “This particular song is a tribute to the ‘90s Dischord band Circus Lupus and/or their singer Chris Thompson who was later in one of our all-time favourite bands The Monorchid. Where’d they find that sound? It gets me SO excited!

The video, below was put together by Marx, also using footage of the band’s first show (recorded by Lance Alden).

“The ‘90s DC scene was foundational to the way I interact with music. It is also pretty cool that the feeling Circus Lupus inspires (being excited) rhymes with one of my favourite Circus Lupus songs (‘Unrequited’),” adds Dave (vocals/guitar).

Even band members not originally in the know got on board, per drummer/vocalist Emilor. “I had never heard of Circus Lupus until I joined Night Court but any band that named themselves after a SCTV skit has got to be great, right?”

Speaking of naming bands after TV shows…

Nervous Birds! Too
Debt Offensive, Snappy Little Numbers Quality Audio Recordings (2022)

Night Court may have a silly name, but the band feels sincere and (mostly) serious. Rooted in garage-punk, the sounds are familiar in form but each track on this 12-song record gives a different energy. Generally speaking, it’s melodic and positive punk with a lo-fi DIY vibe. There are elements of the old Plan-It-X sound but with a little more … Read more

You’ve heard the black box joke, right? The plane crash joke? People say “if the black box is so strong why don’t they build the whole plane out of that?” It’s nonsensical, extrapolatory logic -- unless, of course, you’re Night Court. The Vancouver based lo-fi punk trio has taken a … Read more
