Band Profile

Less Than Jake

Less Than Jake is a ska-punk band formed in 1992 in Gainesville, Florida. They were recently released from their contract with Warner Brothers. Their current line-up includes Chris (vocals, guitar), Roger (bass, vocals, guitar at certain live shows), Vinnie (drums, lyricist), Buddy (trombone, bass at certain live shows) and JR (saxophone). The band's name derives from a dog Vinnie had while growing up, which was treated better than the rest of the family. It's also a reference to the phrase "everything is jake," which is an old phrase meaning everything is cool. Read more at last.fm

In With the Out Crowd (2006)

I'm a huge Less Than Jake fan. Hello Rockview is one of my favorite albums ever recorded, so when I heard that the band would be working with Howard Benson (who produced that stellar record)…

TV EP (2010)

In theory, Less Than Jake covering catchy theme songs and product jingles sounds like a good idea. It seemed to work in the past. However, Less Than Jake’s TV/EP will fall short of…

Less Than Jake

Hello Rockview (Reissue)

Sleep It Off, 2011

It has been nearly 13 years since Hello Rockview was first released, and the album still holds up. Like with the first couple of re-releases, Sleep It Off have redesigned the original cover and coupled the original album with a live recording of it in its entirety.

There isn’t much left to be said about the studio recording of the album that hasn’t already been said over the past decade. It’s still one of the best ska-punk albums released. The main appeal of the re-release is the live recording of the entire album from a 2007 show in their home state of Florida with crystal clear audio. They manage to rip through every song with oodles of energy and excitement.  When they do take a break between songs—you can enjoy some occasional funny banter that involves them cracking some jokes about themselves,  dealing with a heckler, and some trivia regarding a few of the songs.

I’d recommend this for fans of live albums or if you’re looking to get someone into Less Than Jake. The CD release comes with a DVD of the live performance, while the audio of the show can be acquired from digital media outlets.

oh come on, this album is legendary, it deserves at least a 9/10, doesn't really get better than this.

Well, had I been reviewing the album itself when it was first released, I would have given it a higher score. As a reissued (digital) release though with just a live version of the album and nothing really new like rare b-sides or something, it deserved a 7 at best. Thanks for your input though, and I'm sure the actual DVD would lead to a bump in the score.
