It's always cool when bands from opposite sides of the world do a split together. It worked great for Thursday and Envy. Here, we have UNFUN from Canada and Despite Everything from Greece. Both have a different brand of dirty punk-rock. In the case of this split though, the Canadians lost.

UNFUN's songs have great material to dance and sing-a-long to. The only problem is the quality of the recordings are so muffled and hard to understand that it ruins the listening experience. You can just barely hear the vocals and at times you can barely even make out what they're playing over the distortion. I know it's kind of their thing, but if they cleaned it up just a bit it'd be so much more enjoyable.

Despite Everthing's half of the split is much more sharp. The first track, "If You're Going Through Hell," It's got a bit of a Hot Water Music influence going on but a tad heavier. Their second track, "Roads Unfold," takes a different approach. It's catchier, picks up the pace, and more anthemic. Both bands had good material, but Despite Everything had the better recordings and saved the split. It's a shame since UNFUN had the best song with, "Tight Knit Seams."

Indianola (2005)

The 80's weren't really as bad as those VH1 specials make it out to be. Sure the fashion of those years was pretty atrocious, but try going to a concert today without laughing. It's hard, trust me. Throughout the decade there was quality music being made on all fronts - pop, hardcore, new-wave, hip hop, and punk. There were some … Read more

Generations: A Hardcore Compilation
Revelation (2005)

I turned 31 about a month ago and at my age a person tends to finally want to "grow up" and get out of hardcore. There's been plenty of lonely Friday and Saturday nights (like tonight) where I've wanted just pack up 90% of my CD collection (the fuck if I'm going to give up my Cro-Mags and Lifetime discs) … Read more

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland

Tempers of music fans ran high from the day stories were posted on various sites that specific bands were to be covering songs that are heralded as classics in the genres of punk rock and hardcore. A metalcore band covering Bad Brains? A pop-punk band covering the legendary Gorilla Biscuits? Surely this is some sort of joke. Surely not. Say … Read more
