Lazerbeak - Penelope

Doomtree producer Lazerbeak is back with a new solo LP by the name of Penelope.

Lazerbeak, who serves as CEO of Doomtree Records, has worked with Lizzo, Trampled By Turtled, GAYNGS, and many more, last released Lava Bangers eight years ago. While that record was more aggressive, his latest record is described as befitting his lifestyle in this 30s as a parent of three.

"Whereas Lava Bangers’ 20 short, high-energy heat rocks relied heavily on monstrous drums, punishing low end, and gnarly horn stabs - sounding at times more like the fury of Run The Jewels or the Just Blaze-helmed Rocafella Records era - Penelope finds Beak stripping every sound back to its individual core to create seven meticulously slow-building and expansive instrumental meditations that ebb and flow with a newfound patience and restraint rarely seen from the producer," a Doomtree newsletter says.

Penelope will be available on CD on Sept. 27 and LP when available. (It is also named after Beak's eldest child).

The 7-headed monster has enough disparate characters that I could fill the proverbial pages here without even addressing No Kings, their second official full-length. The band recently made some internet waves with the mash-up Wugazi project—which is where I’ll start since the opening track, “No Way,” begins with a guitar … Read more
