Over this past summer, file-sharing fiends around the world rallied behind the leak of the new Girl Talk album. Everyone felt pretty suave for getting such a hyped item before its release date, although many were confused at how different the new album sounded. Unfortunately, soon after that they all found out that this leak wasn't Girl Talk at all, but a mash-up DJ called Speaky, also hailing from Pennsylvania.

This fake leak was Speaky's Mashcore Voume. 2, his second collection of sample-based remixes. Many immediately rejected this as being downright awful after they found out they had been duped, but I decided to take a few more listens to see how Speaky actually stood against Girl Talk.

What I found is that it's really not too bad. I'm not sure I agree with all of the chosen samples here, but it's intriguing throughout. I don't like Girl Talk having such a monopoly over this musical niche, and Speaky offers an adequate supplement. His albums are all free on his website, which is also a nice bonus. This deserves slightly more attention than just the "fake Girl Talk leak," and is better than most of the failed mash-up attempts I've heard.

The Dwarves

Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows
GREEDY (2025)

Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows is a live studio recording from 1989, released on picture disc earlier this year on limited vinyl for Record Store Day. Given that it came shortly before the release of Blood, Guts & Pussy, it's no surprise that it's heavy on songs from that record (10 of 14, if I've counted correctly). It's more primal than … Read more
