Hatewaves – The Tombs — A389, 2011

Before i get done writing this review i may have listened to this record 5 times, possibly more. That is listening to this record once for each inch of vinyl it is pressed onto. Those familiar with Hatewaves from their 7 inch release last year should know the bands' pedigree within hardcore and metal and probably would have bought this by now. For the uninitiated the members of of this band include tenures in Pulling Teeth, Stout and Triac among others. Out of those bands Triac easily draws the closest comparison. That is not to say that they are merely playing unheard Triac songs. On the other hand both bands play a similar style of slightly hardcore influenced grind.

The songs blaze by with strong riffs and brutal vocals with a hardcore feel to them. Every musician here is pretty top notch employing their powers to create a very complete whole. This aids the listener in picking up hooks that exist just below the surface here. While none of the hooks is outright or very clear upon first listen the band uses their skills to make what maybe some of the catchier grind style songs i have heard in awhile.

There is nothing outright groundbreaking on this short record. Instead the band obviously loves what they are playing and seems to have fun playing it. This translates into the songs and is a better record for it. No overly political grandstanding or over the top technical wizardry just brutal fun grind.

Totally Slow

The Darkness Intercepts
Refresh Records (2024)

I find Totally Slow a hard band to categorize. Their brand of melodic, hard punk is familiar and comforting -- rooted in ‘80s hardcore, ‘90s skatepunk, and post-something guitar-driven rock. The press release namedrops Dag Nasty and Hot Snakes, among others, which I think are good starting points. But while it’s familiar, it’s absolutely not a carbon copy. Like their forebearers, the songs … Read more

Steamachine

City of Death
Records Workshop (2023)

City Of Death is the third album from Polish noise makers Steamachine. Having dabbled in a few metal styles over their career, City Of Death has a heavy carnival influence to it which I have to say I really like. It's interesting just how much more sinister things sound when you pump eerie, jingly circus sounds amongst very dark, heavy, … Read more

Faulty Cognitions

Somehow, We Are Here
Cercle Social Records (2024)

The opening track on Somehow, We Are Here is a statement. Yes, Faulty Cognitions is a punk band with members of Low Culture, Shang-A-Lang, Nocturnal Prose, and more. Yes, this shares a lot of commonalities, but it’s also a new band with a new sound. The band humbly says they were going for an early, jangly R.E.M. vibe but self-confess that it has more of a Replacements thing going on … Read more
