Tristan Shone (Author and Punisher)

SPB: You are building your own instruments and that is quite impressive on its own. How do you go about building those “Drone/Dub Machines?”

Shone: It is a long process where I initially have an idea of a sound and also a motion that I think would be satisfying to marry to that sound. When these two elements come together in my mind I am then able to really geek out on the details of design and fabrication. Usually the machines I make have a direct relationship to the technology I am working with in my job (e.g. large electron microscopes, precision optical equipment, CNC machinery) and I adapt some of the technical elements to my designs various forms. After that I take the CAD model and machine the parts and assemble. For the next few months I program the functionality of each to work with various music software and just learn to play the damn thing.
