Chicago's instrumental metal quartet Pelican are back with Nighttime Stories next month, releasing June 7 on Southern Lord.

While the band has two songs available for preview on their bandcamp page now, they have additional developments as well, including a beer collaboration with Metropolitan Brewing.

"Both Pelican and Metropolitan have somewhat limited scopes due to aesthetic limitations we've self-imposed: PELICAN will always be a niche enterprise because we play instrumental metal; Metropolitan's brewing output is limited due to the fact that they only brew lagers, which take much longer to brew than ales and therefore tie up the capacity of their equipment. Thus, both of us are pursuing a very specific aesthetic/artistic mission and creating a legacy rather than doing things that might be more immediately profitable," says Trever de Brauw, speaking of the collaboration. The beer debuted at a special listening party at the brewery last night, May 30. The collaboration is named "Cold Hope," after a track on the forthcoming album, and falls under the biere de garde style.

Pelican will be touring extensively this year, hitting the road next month with Cloakroom. Nighttime Stories is the band's first new record in six years.

Southern Lord (2019)

The passage of time signals many changes; life, death, birth – the cycle continues unabatingly, waiting for the next movement and giving no room for change. For Pelican, the six years since their last record, Forever Becoming, has seen many instances of life, death and birth and the passing of former Tusk member (a project also featuring members of Pelican) Jody … Read more

Forever Becoming
Southern Lord (2013)

It has been about four years since the release of What We All Come to Need, what was in my opinion the only weak moment in Pelican’s career. The Ataraxia/Taraxis EP, released in 2012, gave a first idea of the shape of things to come and now Forever Becoming has finally landed.Pelican was never a band that would stay in just one place. What We All Come to Need
Southern Lord (2009)

Pelican's new record What We All Come to Need is a gorgeous journey through sludge rock with some moments of beautiful calm. But does it hold your attention enough to be a repeated listen?
