Founded by retired math professor and Angry Samoans co-founder Gregg Turner, Gregg Turner Group has announced a run of live dates in southern California in April. The band, who last released Songs for Sparrow (Nick and Dime/Triple X Records), will be joined by Roman's Weirdo's and The Unclaimed.
Says Turner:
These three shows are the first SoCal gigs for the Gregg Turner Group since I moved to New Mexico in 1993. The last official Angry Samoans gig was at Club Lingerie in 1991 so this is a 32-years in the making homecoming! I no longer dial-in to hardcore songs and attitude, mostly what we’re doing is a catchy amalgam of ‘60s garage rock a la Kinks, Velvets and Troggs with a little Tom Lehrer and Allan Sherman sprinkled in for seasoning. This mix fits well with the ‘60s caveman garage stomp of Shelley Ganz and the storied Unclaimed. They’re L.A. stalwarts ‘60s psych protagonists on the scene for over four decades. Having Cliff Roman's Weirdos’ soulful sounds of the first punk wave in L.A. of the ‘70s puts a nice edge on the whole affair. The sad loss of Dix Denney positions these shows as a heartfelt tribute to a friend and fellow musician.
Turner is joined in the group by Sarah Meadows on bass and harmony vocals, David Barsanti on drums, and Aaron Anderson on lead guitar.
Turner also published a collection of stories titled Hallucinations From Hell: Confessions of an Angry Samoan (Rarebird Lit).
