The Twin is back -- the New York, NY based band returns with their second album, Blue Honey, on Sept. 12.
The new album features eight songs and is set to release on Mind Over Matter Records. We have the honor of debuting one of those songs today, "Grace."
The new record sees growth from the band's break-up themed dark debut, plus a shifting lineup. On Blue Honey the band is moving on from breakup, now imbibing in the impulsive recklessness of the search for a new love. It's still heavy, but more uplifting in spirit than its predecessor.
Vocalist/guitarist and primary songwriter Bryan Louie breaks down the new single and video for us in detail:
The song "Grace" is the most personal song I wrote for the record. Not only is it about someone who has changed my life for the better but the seed of the music was started with a lifelong friend. During the height of COVID a childhood friend Kevin and I decided to get high and jam guitars over zoom as you were to do at the time. After some mindless jamming he ended up riffing on a two chord progression which I immediately was drawn to and started playing along with. The progression felt nostalgic, it was movie music, and I got lost in the scenes it created in my head. We hazily drifted along the riff for a while and then signed off. Later that night I started replaying the progression, messing with the chord voicings, tempo and dropping it down 2 keys. Like magic the song poured out of me. Pre chorus to chorus and melodies came quickly, random words and mood. I met my current girlfriend shortly after and we had our ascent into love. Moving quickly through the stages we reached our first real knock out drag out fight. We made up. In the aftermath the words came out to "Grace." I’ve struggled long and hard at being happy and content, about being appreciative of what I have and not letting life just drag me back into the fucking abyss. She helps me do exactly that and this song is for Hannah.
The band nailed the feel on this. Jeff’s mid tempo driving beat, Arty's lead that I could loop forever and Mike’s meaty bassline grounding the song. We went for broke on this one and Adam Cichocki captured it perfectly and added really cool unexpected flourishes in the mix.
The video was directed by Nathaniel Shannon who really took the concept and made it shine. We had a great time shooting in my car sweating in the stifling summer heat in my good friend Sal’s driveway in New Jersey.
Original members vocalist Louie (Common Sage/Kai Mark) and drummer Jeff Gensterblum (Coalesce, The Casket Lottery) return on Blue Honey, this time joined by Arty Shepherd(Beinn, Errortype 11) and Michael MacIvor (Candira, Lamacchia).
