The Carvels NYC released a little single for the holiday season. I know that the season is already over, but this single still deserves to get a little attention from you. So pay attention!

On the A-side of this single we find “I Want You Around”. The name might sound familiar. This is a cover of one of their influences: The Ramones. This cover doesn’t stray too far from the original. It sounds a bit smoother and warmer than the original though.

B-side “My Little Troll” is also a song that you might recognize. It is a The Carvels NYC original song, but it was previously released on Live From The Cutting Room. On that record it was performed live, this time around you’ll get a studio recording. Biggest difference is not the live feel, no it is the absence of the saxophone. Luckily the song is strong enough to still be very enjoyable. I like how the saxophone solo is replaced by a guitar solo. A very elegant solution.

There is a bonus track which is titled “Santa Had To Get A Day Job”. It is a title that I find hilarious on the one hand while on the other hand it confronts you with the harsh reality of life with people living from paycheck to paycheck while working multiple jobs. I try to focus on the humor of it though. It is a very upbeat song. And the only one with a saxophone on it. A great tune, I dig this.

Let me tell you something about reviewing and how it is decided what will get a review on here. Sometimes it is very straight forward: our dark overlord gives a direct order to review something. Luckily (for me at least) life is keeping him too busy to that stuff too often. That’s when I get to browse through the seemingly … Read more

Life Is Not A Waiting Room EP
Independent (2019)

Is artwork an important part of a record? I tend to think so. I am bit old-school and like to listen to a record with the cover in my hand looking at the artwork or reading along with the lyrics. The Carvels NYC must feel the same. Their previous EP Everything With You Is A Travesty had a real gem on the … Read more

If you follow Scene Point Blank you might be aware I like The Carvels NYC. So a new EP by their hand is good news in my book. Even if it only has three tracks and leaves me hungry for more. Again. This is going to be a short review. There is not much new to mention about this EP. The artwork … Read more
