Fields Of Regret is the brainchild of musician Filip Van Lysebeth, a producer based in Belgium. This self titled five track EP, released through Bassick Records on November 18th 2022, unveils Fields Of Regret's blend of horror fuelled gothic and industrial metal crossed with punk rock and a carnival style theme. In a statement from Bassick Records the EP is " a grim mirroring of society through heavy instrumentation with a ghoulish twist, this chilling self titled EP opens the doors to a realm of terror"!!

The industrial sound of opening track "Zu All The Ant" reverberates around your speakers and commands your attention in an effective way and leaves you keen for more. The single from this EP released early September this year "Pinky Lace and Pixie Dust" is another good song. A little more upbeat but still with an industrial undertone yet faster paced and the more light hearted track on the EP. Tracks 3 "Algoritmic Lie" and 4 "Fields Of Regret Part 1" let the record down for me. Although lyrically sound, with a mix of dark humour, current affairs and self awareness, I found the combination of fast punk drums and slowed industrial guitar in both tracks confusing which really upset the vocal line, making the chorus sound out of time with the music and made it quite difficult to listen to. It's a shame really as both songs have some positive parts to them even if "Fields Of Regret Part 1" does have an annoying high pitched melody to boot. The bass lines and crashing drums on both tracks are pretty good though. Final track "Tattoos and Tears" brings things back to a comfortable place in my mind with some great gothic riffs melded with that industrial backline and left me feeling a lot less triggered than the previous two tracks.

Fields Of Regret is an interesting first EP from Van Lysebeth who has written and performed this all himself and it has some really good elements to it. The horror/carnival theme is a big plus side for me as well as the fact that each song is only about 2 minutes. I enjoyed the lyrical content and the music however it was disjointed in places which did put me off.

The Phase Problem

The Power Of Positive Thinking
Brassneck Records (2024)

I spent a good part of the late ‘90s annoyed at the abundance of Ramonescore. I’ll stand by my word: many of the bands of that era were carbon copies that didn’t bring anything new to the format. But time has passed and what was overdone is now a refreshing change of pace. For whatever reason, when I hear a … Read more

Totally Slow

The Darkness Intercepts
Refresh Records (2024)

I find Totally Slow a hard band to categorize. Their brand of melodic, hard punk is familiar and comforting -- rooted in ‘80s hardcore, ‘90s skatepunk, and post-something guitar-driven rock. The press release namedrops Dag Nasty and Hot Snakes, among others, which I think are good starting points. But while it’s familiar, it’s absolutely not a carbon copy. Like their forebearers, the songs … Read more

Steamachine

City of Death
Records Workshop (2023)

City Of Death is the third album from Polish noise makers Steamachine. Having dabbled in a few metal styles over their career, City Of Death has a heavy carnival influence to it which I have to say I really like. It's interesting just how much more sinister things sound when you pump eerie, jingly circus sounds amongst very dark, heavy, … Read more
