Lair of the Minotaur is a band that managed to get their sound right and have stick with it since they first formed. With their doom/sludge/thrash hybrid they have managed to release four great albums: CarnageThe Ultimate Destroyer, my personal favorite War Metal Battle Master and their latest full length Evil Power. And now they are back with their new EP, Godslayer, doing what they know how to do best.

Including only two tracks (arrrrgh!! Why only two?), here you find the band at its best. The title track has got an unbelievable groove to it; with Lair of The Minotaur using a doom/sludge basis on top of which they unleash a hellish attack of Slayer-ized thrash riffs you could possibly bang your head until it falls of your shoulders with this one. Second track “The Black Heart of The Stygian Drakonas” is less straightforward and what it lacks in groove it compensates in heaviness, dirty sound and aggression. It basically keeps transforming, starting of in a hardcore/sludge mix before it turns to a thrash song (even with some death metal growls) then to a doom/sludge anthem and finally closes with the use of weird synths, it is just fucking frantic if you ask me.

For fans of the band: you will not be disappointed, on the other hand people that have not heard of Lair of the Minotaur before this will act as a great introduction to the band. If the next album sounds anything like this then we are definitely in for a treat guys, only reason it gets a seven is because it comes with only two songs.

Carnage
Southern Lord (2004)

It will take roughly 20-30 seconds of Carnage for you to come to the conclusion that it's no surprise that Lair of the Minotaur's debut ended up on Southern Lord Records. Oddly enough, this is actually a re-released effort, a vinyl version of the album that featured only six tracks. So it's quite a treat to have this version for … Read more

Cannibal Massacre
Southern Lord (2005)

In 2004 we were treated to Carnage, the debut effort from this throwback thrash/metal outfit from Chicago. If you heard it, good. If not, well, let's just say that the band is highly influenced by the likes of Celtic Frost. Fake metal fans should be sure to Google that name before continuing. Here in 2005 we are awaiting the band's … Read more

Lair of the Minotaur

War Metal Battle Master
Southern Lord (2008)

It is now five years into Lair of the Minotaur's existence and I think its safe to say that this band is not a gimmick or a novelty act in the least. Sure, their lyrics are based on Greek mythology and their sound harkens back to the 1980's, but Lair of the Minotaur is the real deal. This three-piece is … Read more
