Lair of the Minotaur: old lineup, new material

The original lineup of Lair of the Minotaur will reunite for an April 20 show in Chicago, IL marking the band's 20th anniversary.

The lineup of drummer Larry Herweg (Pelican), plus guitarist/vocalist Steven Rathbone and bassist DJ Barraca (both of 7000 Dying Rats), first formed the group two decades ago, later signing to Southern Lord and ultimately shifting the lineup throughout their existence.

The new/old lineup has recorded two new songs as well, sharing "Six Days in Hades" with us now.

“It’s been really fun reconnecting and jamming with DJ and Steve after a seventeen-year break. The original plan was to relearn Carnage for its 20th anniversary and play some reunion shows, until Steve sent us his ideas for ‘Dark Sorcery Beyond’ and ‘Six Days In Hades’ and it was a no-brainer to bang these out. Both tracks came together pretty effortlessly and were fun to track in the studio. I’m looking forward to their live debut later this month,” Herweg says.

Additional live dates are pending on both US coasts.

With their doom/sludge/thrash hybrid they have managed to release four great albums: Carnage, The Ultimate Destroyer, my personal favorite War Metal Battle Master and their latest full length Evil Power. And now they are back with their new EP, Godslayer, doing what they … Read more

War Metal Battle Master
Southern Lord (2008)

It is now five years into Lair of the Minotaur's existence and I think its safe to say that this band is not a gimmick or a novelty act in the least. Sure, their lyrics are based on Greek mythology and their sound harkens back to the 1980's, but Lair of the Minotaur is the real deal. This three-piece is … Read more

In 2004 we were treated to Carnage, the debut effort from this throwback thrash/metal outfit from Chicago. If you heard it, good. If not, well, let's just say that the band is highly influenced by the likes of Celtic Frost. Fake metal fans should be sure to Google that name before continuing. Here in 2005 we are awaiting the band's … Read more
