This band is what one supposes would be the great Canadian deathcore hope. That is to say they follow in the footsteps, at least in theory, of Despised Icon. While I'd be the first to say that those are pretty big boots to fill in reality. So you know in basic terms what to expect, a little tech, heavy moshable parts, pounding drums and grunt to scream vocals. Everything I've just listed comes through in abundance. One might even say in an over abundance if anything. The band lays it's cards on the table for everyone to see throughout the album.

The Instruments are incredibly tight within the songs. The drums blast away giving a sense a semblance to the guitarists. The drummer is clearly talented but seems to rely on triggers a bit. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as the drums stay fairly consistent, and that is necessary to anchor everything else in this case. The guitars play semi tech driven parts that seem driven on sounding more technical than they are. This isn't always bad as it keeps things interesting. What the guitarists have done well is inject a few melodic riffs in the course of the songs. This helps to push the songs forward and helps to give the songs hooks of some sort.

Unfortunately the part that really helps a metal band of this type stick out is missing. That is to say the vocalist, while not bad is nothing special. The vocalist trades in the demonic scream for the better part of the album. While he does this style ably it creates a huge amount of monotony in that aspect of the album. That is certainly not to say that the album would be benefited at all by having a whiny singer meander his way through a non existent chorus either. Just changing the vocal style from time to time would go a long way in the course of the album.

Simply said this The Last Felony are one of the more musically interesting and respectable contenders in the deathcore field. While they may have to work a bit more to truly stick out at least they have interesting lyrics and real talent. If you're in need of a fix of really heavy music this might be your bet.

Carnivorous Flower

Carnivorous Flower
Dead Broke Rekerds (2025)

There's a time to be cerebral and there's a time to tell it like it is. Carnivorous Flower lives by the latter. Their debut has 10 songs: 18 minutes in total. Each of the songs is catchy as heck and you can pretty much singalong on your first listen. It's "simple" punk with peppy energy and a lot of heart. … Read more

SUB/SHOP

Democatessen
Independent (2025)

Richmond, VA has always had a way of bending punk into something sharper and stranger, and Sub/Shop feels like a direct product of that tradition. Their EP democatessen isn’t a debut in the wide-eyed sense but a statement from musicians who’ve already spent years inside heavy, confrontational music and are now choosing precision over spectacle. Across six tracks, Sub/Shop delivers … Read more

One-eyed wind-up dancing eyeballs boppin' and weavin' with Scott "Deluxe" Drake and Jeff Fieldhouse from the one and only and never replicated the almighty "The Humpers". I was lucky to see them back in the 90's in Toronto at a hot, sweaty club in the dead of summer, back when there was a blue hue of cigarette smoke, a faint … Read more
