For two veteran bands the split may seem like an odd option as it is generally used to introduce new bands to another bands audience. Well, Integrity and Gehenna have never been bands to stick to the norm in any facet or their careers. So we have a shared stopgap of sorts while both bands seem to work towards full length releases in the future. So we have what could be a taste of things to come.

Gehenna starts side a with a moody guitar part slowly building a dark feeling over the proceedings. "Parallel Hells" does a great job of allowing the normally brutal band to step just outside of their norm by giving the song a more melodic feel before completely destroying everything for the final bit of the song. This leads into their other song "Amphetamine Psychosis" which continues the rage that the first song ended with and builds upon it. Layering tortured screams and blown out guitars make the song a perfectly vicious counter to the restraint that the first song showed.

Integrity has continued to build into something different with each release. The newest incarnation seems to match the bands darkened textures with the destructive, blown out sound of classic Japanese Hardcore. Their sole contribution to this release "I Know VVhere Everyone Lives" continues this trend. This is done while still managing to include an intro that sounds like classic era Metallica allowing for a quiet guitar figure and slight cymbal pieces to be used tastefully before going into a blown out distorted thrasher of a song. This is all made stronger by allowing melodic texture to seep through in parts giving the song momentum and a certain classicism in itself.

Indianola (2005)

The 80's weren't really as bad as those VH1 specials make it out to be. Sure the fashion of those years was pretty atrocious, but try going to a concert today without laughing. It's hard, trust me. Throughout the decade there was quality music being made on all fronts - pop, hardcore, new-wave, hip hop, and punk. There were some … Read more

Generations: A Hardcore Compilation
Revelation (2005)

I turned 31 about a month ago and at my age a person tends to finally want to "grow up" and get out of hardcore. There's been plenty of lonely Friday and Saturday nights (like tonight) where I've wanted just pack up 90% of my CD collection (the fuck if I'm going to give up my Cro-Mags and Lifetime discs) … Read more

Tempers of music fans ran high from the day stories were posted on various sites that specific bands were to be covering songs that are heralded as classics in the genres of punk rock and hardcore. A metalcore band covering Bad Brains? A pop-punk band covering the legendary Gorilla Biscuits? Surely this is some sort of joke. Surely not. Say … Read more
