Auxillary Records/Coliseum (Ryan Patterson)

What are your top five albums that were released in 2008?

  1. Young Widows - Old Wounds
  2. Deerhoof - Offend Maggie
  3. Constantines - Kensington Heights
  4. Cursed - Architects of Troubled Sleep
  5. Dillinger Four - Civil War

What band did you discover in 2008 (can be a brand new band or an older band) that had an impact on your life? What made them significant?

Actually, Dillinger Four. I'd seen them play and they were really fun, but hadn't connected with their past records for whatever reason. I randomly checked out "Civil War" when it was streaming online and it just clicked for me. I went out and bought the CD and really loved it and connected with the album and lyrics... I think it may be the only release on Fat that I've ever purchased actually! The songs are great, straight-forward punk songs with a bit of 90s post-hardcore here and there, I generally connect most with a four-chord riff and a good melody. The lyrics, for the most part, address many of the same thoughts and issues that have been spinning around in my head and in my songs for a while now... "There will come a day though, smash your fucking halo." That's a great fucking line.

How will you remember 2008? (In terms of music)

I haven't really marked times in my life based on other people's records in quite a while, these days I'm able to keep my times and memories in tact based on what I was doing with music at the time. So, 2008 will mostly be recalled as a year of a lot of touring with Coliseum, multiple U.S. tours, tours in Canada, Australia, Europe, and Japan with so many amazing bands and friends. I'd also have to include Young Widows releasing "Old Wounds" and seeing my younger brother accomplish his vision with that record.

Vinyl record sales saw a significant increase this year while hard copy sales continued to dwindle. Is this a return to the glory days for vinyl or just a phase? Explain.

Man... Who knows? I hope record sales stay up and bands can still get by, but I'm much more concerned with the economy and health care issues that are facing us right now.

What was the most memorable moment for you in 2008? (Can be in terms of anything)

It's all an awesome blur.

What can we look forward to from you in 2009?

Coliseum is working on a new 7" EP right now then will begin to work on our next LP for Relapse, as well as tons of touring I'm sure.

What three records are you looking forward to most in 2009?

In my dreams... A new Fugazi album, a Bad Brains record that's actually good, and in reality probably Rick Froberg's new band, Obits.
