SPB: Which records do you consider essential for the development of your music?

Asvnder: I started ASVNDER because I decided there weren't enough Sunn O))) records so I tried to make my own. So, their discography, except maybe Black One, which I'm not that fond of because I'm special and unique.

There's a lot of grunge influences in there too, In Utero and Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness especially. Early shapes of some of the songs started with me playing “Heart Shaped Box” or “Zero” very slowly and then moving it about a bit with an absurd amount of distortion and reverb.

Ambient stuff obviously, especially Boards of Canada who I've loved for years. My favourite of theirs is Geogaddi, I listen to that at least once a week, but the more direct influence is The Campfire Headphase, the way they do washes with guitars in a way that feels like electronic music instead of shoegazey.

I'm a dungeon synth guy too, so there's some of that in there, the way you can tell an implied narrative with instrumental music, I think most closely The Golden Path by L A N D S R A A D.

Finally, a bit of a left field one, but the Mass Effect 3 soundtrack. The piano segments are basically me doing “Leaving Earth” from the start of the game.
