Chyppe Crosby (Deady)
SPB: Louisville has had an incredibly deep underground music history, but what does the current Louisville punk scene give Deady that you don't think the band would have gotten growing up somewhere else?
Crosby: I think the scene here is more familial. Most genres of music kind of coalesce in Louisville, and it’s not particularly cliquey about what kind of music you play. We all come from different musical backgrounds, and I knew everyone in Deady before we started the band through other projects they were involved in.
I think there’s a difference between going to a show because you want to see your friends play and going because you’re trying to network. I’ve run sound at a lot of the music venues in Louisville, so if we’re trying to book a show, I’m usually just texting someone I know personally. There’s a whole network of people here that we’ve built relationships with over the years, and I think that makes a big difference. You’re not trying to convince some stranger to give your band a chance. You’re working with people you already know and have a history with.
I think that’s something Louisville has given us that might be harder to find in a bigger city, where there can be more of an emphasis on promoting your own brand and trying to turn everything into a career move. Here, it feels like the music is still the thing that brings everyone together, and Deady is just one part of a larger community that we were involved in long before the band existed.
