Chris McCaughan (Lawrence Arms, Sundowner)

SPB: I take it by the multiple baseball references in your songs that you're a fan. What are your thoughts on the recent doping scandal?

McCaughan: Hold up! There's cheating and steroids in baseball?!! C'mon. Are we really so surprised by all this?

It's certainly unfortunate, as I think a lot of us felt like the doping era was slowly becoming history. But alas… What I love most about it all is just how full of shit guys like Braun and A-Rod are. Amazing!!! I love baseball for the tradition, the folklore, the history. For me sports are, in essence, about narratives and characters and baseball is filled with both.

But I should be clear about something here. I love sports (as a side note I can't stand the cynical internet dicks on the day of some big game who post… yay sports!!! or something equally witty. How droll!! Yeah, we get it, you're too cool for sports) but I don't watch baseball so much these days. Perhaps, growing up a Cubs fan has slowly eroded my desire to watch. I feel like it should be noted here, since I don't get much of an opportunity to talk sports in this forum, that basketball has always been the sport I loved, and played, the most. The NBA is the major American league I care most about and follow religiously. I live and die Chicago Bulls basketball, man. The rest… well, I'm just a sucker for a good storyline.

Jared (Sundowners) SPB: What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you on a tour? Have you ever been stranded or forced to cancel? Jared: Great question! and really annoying memories to look back on. Upcoming Talent #1: Sundowner

Upcoming Talent

My original intention was to introduce this article explaining the disappointment we all come to upon realizing that youth is fleeting, however I'll spare the euphemisms. Growing up sucks! Aside from all the responsibilities that are thrust upon you like paying bills and having to work a shitty job everyday, … Read more

The Larger Half of Wisdom
Dirt Cult (2013)

It’s been a couple years of seeing Sundowners’ name pop up on show listings around town. Still, I’ve missed them every time. Well, the band has now popped up on Dirt Cult Records’ roster too, so I figured I was beyond due to see what the Minneapolis band (not to be confused with Lawrence Arms side project Sundowner) is all … Read more

We Chase the Waves
Asian Man (2010)

We Chase the Waves is the second release from Lawrence Arms singer/guitarist Chris McCaughan. While technically his second solo release, this one is truly an individual effort, with McCaughan handling all the instrumental duties except for a few peripherals. His Lawrence Arms bandmate Neil Hennessy handled the majority of the production. Waves has a more stripped down, personal feel than … Read more

Four One Five Two
Red Scare (2007)

I've always thought of The Lawrence Arms' guitarist Chris McCaughan as a bit of a lyrical genius, being able to ever so eloquently put to those seemingly indescribable feelings of your mid-twenties to words. The real magic of his game is the ability to do all of this over the distorted guitars and colossal drums that are often the foreground … Read more

Jeremiah (Small Steps - guitar/vocals) SPB: What song has the best use of whistling? Jeremiah: I feel like the easy answer would be the Bobby McFerrin song "Don't Worry Be Happy". Which is catchy as all get out, but we prefer the road less traveled here in Small Steps. For … Read more

Morgan (Visual Learner – bass) SPB: What was the first song you learned to play on your instrument? Morgan: I think the first song I learned on bass was either “No” by Subhumans or “Boredom” by the Buzzcocks. I was maybe 16? and traded a blunt to my boyfriend for … Read more
