Kevin Hurley (Unstable Shapes – bass)

SPB: What is your favorite Fugazi record?

Hurley: While we can debate the best Fugazi record, a personal favorite of mine is The Argument. It was my entry point for the band. I was admittedly way late to the party on them and as a result never got to catch them live. But I was pulled in from the get-go hearing “Cashout” open the record and the lyrics regarding gentrification are probably even more important today than they were when it dropped 20+ years ago. It struck a nerve with me not just from the lyrical content but also I was just starting to go down the prog-rock rabbit hole in my musical tastes so I discovered it at just the right time. “Argument” seems regularly regarded as something of a prog-punk anthem so I ate it up immediately and “Epic Problem” has one of the most killer tonal shifts in the last minute I love bringing up to this day. And funnily enough I was borrowing from bass parts of that song when we were writing “Jaguar Jaws” on our new record, Delicate Machinery.

McKinnon (Normal Park) SPB: Your bio references math rock, [my opinion] one of the sillier genre names. Is there a music term you hear often that seems like it could have been phrased better? Tyler: I don’t mind math rock as a genre term because it’s simple and descriptive, plus … Read more

Alex Gilliam (Foolsmate) SPB: What does the term “Midwest emo” mean to you? Gilliam: After getting this question, I immediately asked the other guys in Foolsmate for their input.
