Temporary Residence Ltd. has added MIZU to the roster, the first new label signing in nearly five years. MIZU shared the new track "Overture" along with the announcement.
“Overture” is a sonic passageway towards the inner depths of one’s memory and imagination. The main melody of the song came to me unexpectedly during a dreamlike state in transit, repeating like a gentle lullaby in my inner ear until I was able to capture the notes in recorded sound. The music is performed on instruments from my childhood—cello, piano, and voice— alongside evocative field recordings and nostalgic synthesizers. Recorded in various places across the world, the music seeks to capture a childlike sense of wonder, fantasy, and grandeur.
The montage of recorded material was arranged over the course of several years, during which an architectural approach to sound design gradually began to emerge. I welcomed the opportunity to play with space and dimension in ways that felt almost like constructing a house; mixing with my frequent collaborator Ariel Loh helped turn the house from a place to live in to a space with a life of its own.
