Out tomorrow, Scene Point Blank is excited to share the brand new full-length by James Sullivan, Light Years. It’s the first solo record from Sullivan, who also plays with More Kicks and Suspect Parts and – like many recent musical projects, a lack of touring directly led to its creation.
The month was November 2020, one year ago, Sullivan recalls:
In that car crash of a year, November seemed to hit particularly hard. I decided to set myself the challenge of writing one song every day for 10 days and then record them all myself in my little analog setup at home in North London.
Light Years was a move away from writing songs for a live band. Trying out new styles and not thinking about anything for longer than a few minutes. Pure instinct only. There was no intended output for this stuff beyond finishing for the sake of finishing. Then when it was done – old habits die hard – I wanted people to hear it.
The result is tied to style than his other projects, at times showcasing raw garage elements and, at others, pop nuggets and big guitar rock. Overall it falls somewhere in between, showing elements of More Kicks and Suspect Parts but with hard-to-quality working class intangibles that place it equally across a number of rock subgenres while feeling authentic and relatable.
So, naturally, it’s in everybody’s best interests to just call it rock ‘n’ roll.
