Long-running indie rock band The Flaming Lips has a new record out on Nov. 26. Titled Nell & The Flaming Lips, the 9-song collection of Nick Cave covers features 14 year-old Nell Smith on vocals.

The story of the collaboration ties back to Smith frequenting live Flaming Lips shows, eventually leading to meeting the band. From there, Wayne Coyne encouraged the young fan to pursue her own creative endeavors. The band was set to record a collaboration with Smith in person, then Covid caused a change of plans -- specially for Smith to record Nick Cave songs from afar.

In a statement, Coyne says:

It’s always great to meet excited, young creative people. With Nell we could see she is on a journey and thought it would be fun to join her for a while and see if we could get things going. It was a great way to connect with her and help harness her cool attitude to making music.

Cave's catalog was selected largely because Smith was unfamiliar, which allowed greater originally from her vocals.

The album will release via Bella Union.

Even months before its release, it seemed as if everyone had already assumed that the latest record from The Flaming Lips would effectively mark the end of the band's run as alternative rock's quirky reigning champions. When the first single from At War With the Mystics hit the airwaves, I was almost inclined to believe that it was indeed over. … Read more
