Having released Black Hole Superette and a limited pressing 7" already this year, Aesop Rock released a surprise 12-track album today called I Heartd It's A Mess There Too, out  via Rhymesayers. To be specific, it's available digitally today with vinyl shipping from RSE, but will not hit retailers until Dec. 12.

"Built entirely from his own productions, the album strips back his trademark density to let each element breathe -- crisp drums, humming basslines, and lyrical snapshots that capture the rhythm of uncertainty and communication in an off-kilter world," the label says.

“The phrase ‘I Heard It’s a Mess There Too’ started as a lyric, but it got its hooks in me soon after,” Aesop adds via the same label release. “It felt familiar, like something I’d said a thousand times while checking in with friends across different cities. The more I sat with it, the more it started to feel like the center of this project... It’s about observation and communication. Sonically, I wanted a reset-- cleaner beats, more space, fewer layers. Just enough to get a wave rolling and not much more.”

Aesop Rock has a reputation for esoteric and abstract raps. It's certainly an earned reputation, but that background makes it interesting when you peel off the layers of his latest, Black Hole Superette and realize that many of these dense songs are actually about the mundane: walking the dog, cohabitation... hell, even fishkeeping. While there's a lot of day-to-day routine … Read more

Aesop Rock seems to be the rare artist who gets better with age. I enjoyed his early work with Blockhead, but it felt like things started to take off when he took over self-production, steadily growing and hitting what felt like peak when Spirit World Field Guide came out in 2020 (followed by Garbology in ’21). Luckily for all of … Read more

Spirit World Field Guide

Spirit World Field Guide is Aesop Rock’s first full-length in a few years. He’s been busy in the meantime, working on Malibu Ken and other projects, but Spirit World Field Guide has been a slow-building project. And it’s just that: a project. At 21 tracks in total, this is a psychedelic hip-hop adventure that takes the listener to new lands. It’s … Read more
