2004: A Year In Review

Posted pre-2010

The music of 2004 has come and gone, so the next logical step for the music geeks of the world is to wait in anticipation for those new releases of 2005. As they sit and wait, and sometimes wait and wait, the majority of these music geeks, myself included, sit and debate, mostly via the Internet, over which year is going to be better, the past or the present. Looking ahead to the releases of 2005 versus those that came out in this past year, it really isn't an easy call, nor is it ever. Despite knowing a large portion of upcoming releases, it is those unexpected and unplanned albums that make or break a year in music. That being said, here is a sampling of notable artists set to release albums in 2005:

The Mars Volta, Pelican, AFI, Nine Inch Nails, Fantómas, Slayer, Bright Eyes, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Foo Fighters, Cursed, Rocky Votolato, Modern Life is War, Minus the Bear, Madball, Red Sparowes, Cave In, Queens of the Stone Age, Graditude, 30 Seconds to Mars, Isis/Melvins Split, Magnolia Electric Co, M83, General Patton vs. The X-ecutioners, Tristeza, Blood Simple, Above this Fire, CKY, Decahedron, Comeback Kid, Death by Stereo, John Frusciante, Sigur Rós, The Scend, The New Idea Society, Jesu, Hella, Pelican/Mono Split, Torche, Alkaline Trio, Hot Hot Heat, The Melvins Tribute, High On Fire, Dear Lover, Killing the Dream, Meshuggah, The Red Chord, Darkest Hour, Set Your Goals, Propagandhi, 7 Seconds, Mu, Coheed & Cambria, The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, Hella, Open Hand, Enemy, Doomriders, Armor For Sleep, In Pieces, and many many more.

Unseemlier

Interviews • April 24, 2026

It was about a year ago I discovered Unseemlier, shortly before the release of I Have A Screw Loose, Somewhere. It's a wordy title and a somewhat unwieldy band name -- and I’ll use that “a lot going on in a little space” metaphor even further to talk about the … Read more

The New York Dolls: Reflections and Legacy

Music • March 30, 2026

I first discovered the New York Dolls in the mid-to-late 1980s, just as I was beginning to stretch the boundaries of my musical journey. Up until then, my exposure to music had mostly come through my parents, aunts, and uncles. They planted the initial seeds, and those seeds quickly grew, … Read more
