  1. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

  2. What? You thought any other single that was released this year was this good? A hit straight out of nowhere that became the first single in the UK to reach number one from downloads alone. The band had to delete the damn thing before it fell from number one (and before the new single was released.) Everyone and their mother covered it, to varying degrees of success, showing just how big, popular, and awesome the song was. Mrs. Danger Mouse and Mrs. Ceelo must be so proud of their children.

  3. Justin Timberlake - Sexyback

  4. Who saw this coming when Timberlake announced 2006 as the year of his return? All those with their hands up stop telling lies or Santa will take back your presents. Timberlake's first slice from Future Sex/Love Sounds was a brilliant piece of how to listen to far too much Michael Jackson and make music to groove to. The effect-laden vocals hid some of the most sexy lyrics of the year that aren't just smut and made this writer almost faint from shock on more than one occasion.

  5. Girls Aloud - Something Kinda Ooooh!

  6. As always you can rely on Girls Aloud to release a great upbeat fun track that made their best of a necessary purchase for anyone with ears. Daft lyrics as always, but who cares with a song this good!

  7. Nelly Furtardo - Maneater

  8. This year has been the year of great comebacks and great Timbaland productions. "Maneater" showed a side of Furtardo not seen previously- she's dirty and she knows it.

  9. Lily Allen - LDN

  10. An ode to the greatest city in the entire world, Lily's "LDN" was the first and third single taken from her debut album, Alright, Still. The single is an infectious word play filled look at the city of London. Filled with a playful brass backing and even with the honesty of how horrible London can be, it still makes it seem like the best place to live.

Honorable mentions: Lil' Chris - Checkin' it Out, Jamelia - Beware of the Dog, Amy Winehouse - Rehab.

It was about a year ago I discovered Unseemlier, shortly before the release of I Have A Screw Loose, Somewhere. It's a wordy title and a somewhat unwieldy band name -- and I’ll use that “a lot going on in a little space” metaphor even further to talk about the … Read more

It feels like a lifetime ago when Mitt Romney referenced a "war on women" during the 2012 presidential cycle. A lot has changed, a lot has stayed the same -- but a new politically-charged band formed in the aftermath of that comment, calling themselves War On Women. Now, roughly 14 … Read more

I first discovered the New York Dolls in the mid-to-late 1980s, just as I was beginning to stretch the boundaries of my musical journey.
