Cannibal Corpse (Alex Webster)

What are your top five albums that were released in 2008?

  1. Meshuggah - obZen
  2. Jeff Loomis - Zero Order Phase
  3. Hour of Penance - The Vile Conception
  4. Psycroptic - Ob(servant)
  5. Skeleton of God - Primordial Dominion

What band did you discover in 2008 (can be a brand new band or an older band) that had an impact on your life? What made them significant?

I heard Hour of Penance from Italy for the first time this year, they are a great death metal band. I guess they were significant because they play pure death metal, not some offshoot of the genre.

How will you remember 2008? (In terms of music)

There were a lot of great releases in 2008. My favorite albums of the year are all heavy but fairly diverse. It was another good year for the various different genres of metal.

Vinyl record sales saw a significant increase this year while hard copy sales continued to dwindle. Is this a return to the glory days for vinyl or just a phase? Explain.

I don't think there will ever be a return to the glory days of vinyl. This revival seems more like a novelty thing for people too young to have enjoyed vinyl albums when they were actually the industry standard. It makes me happy to see people take an interest in vinyl, but I don't think it has any more chance of coming back than rotary phones, beepers, VHS video cassettes, or any other dated technology.

What was the most memorable moment for you in 2008? (Can be in terms of anything)

I can't remember.

What can we look forward to from you in 2009?

We're releasing our new album "Evisceration Plague" in February, and then we'll be doing a lot of touring in support of it.

What three records are you looking forward to most in 2009?

I'm really interested to hear Obscura's new album. I'm not sure who else is putting out records in 2009, but I'm sure there will be a lot of killer stuff.
