Jon Balun (The Brokedowns)

SPB: You scream a lot. Has that gotten easier or harder on your voice as you're no longer in your 20s?

Balun: I have talked to my personal physician. He strongly agrees with my strict regimen of cigarette smoking and whiskey shots to warm up the ol' vocal  cords. He also recommends that Kris, Eric, and  Moose take turns rabbit-punching my throat for a few minutes before playing. This is essential to getting that sweet quality that my voice possess. Honestly, my voice feels the same. It's actually kinda weak for the first 2 days of a tour. Then, it sustains.

Mustafa Daka (The Brokedowns) SPB:Are there any Albanian bands you’d recommend? Daka: Unfortunately, Albania hasn't produced much in the way of rock, metal or thrash bands. I've reviewed a lot of Brokedowns records over the years. First, I'll say I love the band and I honestly feel like they keep getting better. Second, I'll say that this record threw a couple of surprises at me. The band play multi-vocalist poppish punk in the school of Dillinger Four or Errth, albeit more on the angry side. There … Read more

Maximum Khaki
Red Scare Industries (2023)

As musicians grow older, they have less time to play live, to tour, and to write. It’s been five years since Sick Of Space. The world may have changed, but The Brokedowns have not. Maximum Khaki may nod to their middle-age in the title, and songs like “I’m Sore,” reinforce that, but at heart The Brokedowns are still some goofy … Read more

Sick of Space
Red Scare Industries (2018)

When I stop and look at the discogs, The Brokedowns have been doing what they do for a long time now. What is that, exactly? Well, it’s Midwestern punk that’s angry, funny, heavy, and harmonic. There are contradictions in plain sight in that description, and that diversity in sound is what makes the band so interesting. They seamlessly pull it … Read more
