SPB: What was the first album you ever bought?
Mike: I'm not quite certain what the first album I ever bought was, probably Dookie or Smash. What I can remember is the first time I ever went to the legendary Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ (RIP). I had my dad drive me there specifically so that I could buy Sha Sha by Ben Kweller which, at the time, wasn't stocked at the local big box music store. I am a sucker for a good melody. I think that BK has a way of crafting really inventive melodies while somehow making it all sound so simple. I definitely look to his writing for clues on how to unlock the songs I'm trying to push out of my head and into the world. Nearly 25 years later, that album (as well as the rest of his catalog) remains in constant rotation.
