Justin Baker (Neckscars – guitar)

SPB: What is your favorite protest song?

Baker: While growing up listening to punk rock, I was introduced to many perspectives that were foreign at the time. Propagandhi said "Fuck the Border" and the flag, Bad Religion challenged traditional spiritually and the Dead Kennedys spoke against corruption and war. Among the countless protest songs I've listened to throughout the years, "Born in the USA" is my favorite since it's the most unassuming protest song. It's about veterans coming back from war and being treated like shit by the people that sent them there. Then you have fascists waving their flags and singing it like it's some badass "God Bless America." That's not to say that it's ineffective as a protest song. At the end of the day, some people just don't get the lyrics no matter how straight forward they are. If you liked a band before they got political, you were never paying attention in the first place.
