SPB: How did the collabs on the new album come to be? Did you reach out to the artist with a specific idea, or just ask “hey is there something you want to do here?”
Matt: It started out super simple, just a “would you be willing to do something on our album?” Both Neville [Staple, The Specials] and Aitch [The Selector] replied with a noncommittal that’d-be-lovely-why-the-heck-not answer. So I sent ‘em a couple tracks and they sent back GOLD. Neville went to the next level by having his wife Sugary sing backups on “Easy Like I Do.” Rad! And both their contributions to “Police Brutality” made the song better.
