SPB premiere: Feral Coast by Scrunchies

Posted in Records on March 31, 2022

Scene Point Blank is stoked to premier the latest album from Minneapolis-based punks, Scrunchies!

Coming out on the infamous and always reliable Dirtnap Records, Scrunchies have tightened the filth and the fury that put them on the map without sacrificing that feeling of a train nearly falling off the tracks and they've blessed us with 11 new songs of blistering retro riot grrrl goodness. If the kinetic chaos of opener, "The Houseplant" doesn't sell you on the genius of this record, then you're a basic normie and you don't deserve this record.

You want the Cliff's Notes? OK you lazy dummy. The short of it is that this band has some legit pedigree. 1. Minneapolis. Nuff said. 2. Members of Kitten Forever, Baby Guts, and legendary hardcore band Condominium, and The Buzzcunts (yep, a female Buzzcocks tribute band. Wish I had thought of that). Boom. 3. DIY ethos. Sonically, this record has that grittiness that can't be manufactured. It sounds raw and real. Matt Castore recorded this at his studio, Soft Cult, and fuck me if he didn't nail that gritty production but still polish it juuuuuust enough. It's a great sounding basement tape. 4. Call and response vocals between Lauren and Cusack. Holy crap.

This album is loaded with standout tracks. "The Houseplant," "No Home Planet," "New What"...this sucker is full of dynamics. Chill to chaos, chaos to zen, zen to rage. If this doesn't hit nearly every end of the year list, I'll be in shock. I truly think it is that good. Upon my first listen, I pre-ordered the record. I'm broke as hell, but it was worth stealing all of that "take a penny give a penny" cash and spending it on this record.

Give it a spin. This thing is a true bop. That's what the kids say, right?

FFO Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Hole, and punching Bezos in the weenie.
