Russell Edling (Cherry)

SPB: What was your first show?

Edling: It was July 1999, I was 11. The show was an all-day thing called "Suckfest," run by a local guy in Barnesville, PA.

Pretty much every band within 30 miles came and played. I was blown away, I saw this band called Nine Lives from NY that I thought were awesome, and a band from Freeland, PA called Team Radar. I was there because my oldest sister Lori (she also did the Gloom artwork!) was friends with the guy who ran the show.

Jon (Chokecherry) SPB: How do you feel about the hyphenated genre terms that tend to be applied to your band? Jon: Genre descriptions are fine because people obviously want to know what a band sounds like before they commit time or money to it. But especially in punk, all the … Read more

Stuffed & Ready
Secretly Canadian (2019)

Stuffed & Ready is the third album released by LA band Cherry Glazerr. It’s surprising this is their third album and it’s taken me this long to notice them, but regardless, my timing feels perfect. With an album name like Stuffed & Ready, it’s hard to ignore the boldness of the band. Lead vocalist Clementine Creevy has a dream-like quality … Read more

The Future Was a Long Time Ago
Independent (2015)

Expect adjectives. Adjectives and hyphens. For, you see, Chokecherry are a punk band that doesn’t play punk songs. I guess folk-punk is the subgenre tag du jour, but that term steers in the wrong direction in many ways. As does country-punk, though it’s far more apt. Chokecherry play country songs run through a DIY punk filter, influenced by a lifestyle … Read more

Fuck EP
F-Bomb (2014)

As might be expected considering the word can be used in a variety of ways and can make up nearly every word in a still-coherent sentence, there’s a rich history of use of the f-bomb in music. While the word has sometimes been used to prove a point or make a hard-hitting statement (Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the … Read more

Filippo (Shizune – bass) SPB: Breviario d'oblio is something of a comeback after 8 years. What triggered this comeback? Filippo: It was not meant as a comeback. We were almost ready to enter the studio in 2020, then Covid happened and we lost our practice room. It was hard to … Read more
