Marco (De Kleine Opstand – bass)
SPB: A lot of Dutch bands opt to sing in English, you go against the grain by choosing for the Dutch language. What are the pros and cons for this decision?
Marco: It just occurred to me that we never actually decided to sing in Dutch; we just started doing it. For me, it is the language I have been writing in for years. It was my first toy. I even taught it. When I express myself in a language that is not my mother tongue, a bit of authenticity is always lost and it is precisely that part that we find valuable. Singing in English might make the step to touring outside the Netherlands a bit easier, but to our surprise, our record is being well received there too. That gives us perspective. So, bookers, what are you waiting for? Our shows might be a more fun way to learn Dutch than schoolbooks full of endless rambling about adjectives and verb spelling. Talks during and after the show will be in English; dat is bij dezen beloofd.
