And now for something completely different...
Perhaps sensing that something, yes, different is needed nowadays to stand out in an ever-crowded field of artists and recordings, Chicago-based three-piece Lollygagger has taken a unique approach with regard to their debut full-length record. The self-titled release, a follow-up to last year's Life on Terminus, is accompanied by 30-minute video album which features every music track plus a handful of comedy skits performed by band members Matthew Muffin, Michael Sunnycide, and Kinsey Ring.
I've gotta say, the idea of a punk rock video album (let alone one from Chicago's self-proclaimed "smelliest rock and roll band") piqued my interest right off the bat, and judging from the videos already released, the trippy (and potentially nightmarish?) "Mighty Methuselah's Salami" and playful "A.C. Ripple," the end result, titled The Lollygagger Family Fun Variety Hour, should live up to its name and be entertaining to say the least, boasting hard-grooving bass lines and alternately serious and comic lyrics as well as gonzo visual effects and eye-popping costumes.
If you're in the Chicago area, the full Lollygagger Family Fun Variety Hour will be screening tonight at Logan Arcade and the band will have an LP and video album release show on October 19th at Liar's Club.
