SPB stream - Mush With Benefits

Posted in Records on March 1, 2024

"Maybe the most deranged band I've ever known. There isn't anything like Mush."

That's what Evan Weiss, who has played in IIOI, Pet Symmetry, TTT, Storm Chasers LTD, and more, has to say about our featured stream for the month of March, the second album from Mush, Mush With Benefits.

The Chicago-based band has members of Dowsing, Lettering, and Annabel, which is cool to know but it really doesn't set the tone. It's the band's second release, a 12-song record five years in the making. Expect the emotive tone of the bands just named, but with a lot of self-awareness: half irony, half scathing criticism of a broken industry. Mush With Benefits is an album, a story that evolves over 12 songs to share the unique experiences of being on a stage, sharing a moment, but also managing contractual obligations and business transactions that warp the results. In many ways, it feels like an emo take on The Kinks' Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround

The record is out now on Storm Chasers LTD.
