SPB premiere: "Heavy Machinery" by The SLIP~ons!

Posted in Videos on May 19, 2023

The SLIP~ons! have a new video out today, for the single "Heavy Machinery" from their soon-to-release EP of the same name.

The song is a guitar-rock, power-pop rock 'n' roll romp with heavy hearts and authentic tones from a lineup of seasoned Canadian musicians: Brock Pytel (The Doughboys) on guitar, Brian Minato (Sarah McLachlan) on bass, Rob "Shockk" Matharu (The Spitfires) on guitar, and Shane Wilson on drums. Take many of the best elements of independent rock of the 1980s and 1990s, then flip it through a 2023 lens and reflect. The lyrics of the song take a light-hearted approach to wandering the East Side of Vancouver, BC.

The new record captures the group's evolution, with Pytel explaining:

I used to write complete songs and the band would flesh them out. After a few years, Rob and I got to a level of trust where we started writing together. Things really started getting interesting at that point, and I think "Heavy Machinery" showcases that.

While the members all have other projects, the group formed in 2012, with members splitting time between projects and careers.

Pytel, in particular, cites self-reflection following health concerns in 2020 and re-energizing his musical output -- he also recently released a solo EP, and The SLIP~ons have more in development for 2023-2024, including tour dates.

Heavy Machinery releases on 12" vinyl on June 30. The EP was mixed by Dave Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy).
