SPB premiere: "Always Gonna Let You Down" by Gloomy June

Posted in MP3s on April 20, 2022

SPB is excited to share an exclusive premiere of “Always Gonna Let You Down,” a new single from California Bay Area band Gloomy June.

The indie pop band is named for the cold fog that frequently hits their hometown of San Francisco and sets a mood for the competing atmospheric tones of coastal living.

Speaking to the song’s origins, it began when guitarist Devin Nelson came to band practice with a synth instrumental that reminded members of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Lyrically, it draws inspiration from social distancing attempts throughout pandemic life, coming from the perspective of somebody having a bad time at a party and spreading those vibes to others.

The video below was directed by Izzie Clark, whose house is consequently featured/trashed in the finished video.

Comprised of vocalist Alexi Rose Belchere (she/her), guitarist Devin Nelson (he/they), bassist Jack Sundquist (he/him), and drummer Ash Hyatt (they/them), the group is a continuation or rebirth of The Y Axes, which featured Belchere, Nelson, and Sunquist but added Hyatt in late 2020 and found that the band was shifting in direction.

Gloomy June is set to release their first EP, Popsick, on May 13. They will tour this summer, including playing The Fest 20 in October.
