SPB premiere: "Happy Birthday" by Sammy J. Scorpion

Posted in Videos on May 8, 2022

Later this month Sammy J. Scorpion will release his solo debut.

But that’s not until May 24. First, we need to celebrate his birthday.

Today, Scene Point Blank is excited to with Mr. Scorpion happy birthday, as well as sharing his new single of the same name: “Happy Birthday”.

Come May 24, Scorpion will release a 6-song EP on cassette and digital platforms, courtesy of Weepy Eye (tape) and The Clubhouse Recording Club (digital). It’s the first time that he’s ever released solo material -- as the 6 songs here are entirely written, played and recorded at his home studio (The Clubhouse Recording Club), but Mr. Scorpion has previously played with New Swears (who released material through Dine Alone, Dirt Cult, and Bachelor Records).

“This song is about the melancholy feeling of growing older and how time can feel like it's quickly passing. I guess you could say, the years start coming and they don’t stop coming,” Scorpion says as he turns 32, before adding some behind the scenes details and a bit about his recording philosophy.

“You can hear me playing a cheap plastic harmonica on this track. I had a nicer one that sounded great and was way easier to play, but something about how challenging it was and how breathy and labored it sounded brought some life to the song. When you’re recording music I think there's a tendency to make everything sound flawless. But sometimes there's magic in the little imperfections,” he says.

Check out the video here, filmed my Melanie King and edited by the birthday boy.
