Behind the Scenes of two new Old Currents videos

Posted in Videos on January 28, 2022

On April 22, Old Currents will release a new full-length album called The Glory, The Defeat, a follow-up to 2017’s Three Chords & The Truth. The band has now shared two videos in advance of the record: “No Signs of Life” and “Here, You Throw This Away,” which both capture their modern take on a classic punk sound.

SPB wanted to get learn more about their artistic process, so we reached out to the band to get a “guest commentary” style take about the making-of their videos so far and what stood out to them.

Thanks to the whole band for collectively sharing their experience below.

Now, watch and learn…

No Signs of Life

Despite this being the second video to come out in support of our new album, this was the first music video we did...ever. We worked with Eric DiCarlo of Square Up Studios for both of these videos and both turned out exactly like we hoped. For “No Signs of Life” we rented out a space in Hoboken, only to do 80% of the filming outside in January in the alley behind the space. All we wanted after the shoot was to curl up under a blanket with a hot cocoa. While it was an amazing experience, and the first of many like it to come, we're definitely going to schedule any outdoor shoots for when it's above 20 degrees. But hey, you do what you gotta do.

Here, You Throw This Away

For “Here, You Throw This Away,” we wanted to introduce more of a story, instead of footage just of the band playing, and luckily for us our childhood friend Danny Flaherty (Skins, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Americans, etc.) has been acting, writing and making his own videos for as long as I can remember. So Jake and Danny got together and storyboarded the concept, and brought it to Eric to bring it to life. This was a whole different vibe for this video as we got to have friends come hangout as extras, and we got to shoot it at our favorite bar (thanks Brian!), Stosh's in Fair Lawn, NJ. I always knew Danny was a great actor, but to see it in person, up close was truly amazing to witness. When he got into character, he was able to change the entire feeling of the room, and for a moment we all believed him to really be this insane, end of the world predicting barroom preacher. I can't wait to work with Danny and Eric again and see what else we can all come up with.
